A Vet for Magnolia

Over the Ballard Bridge and north. Short, with one caveat worth knowing about.

The entrance and reception at The Family Pet

Magnolia to Ballard is one bridge and one road. Come up over the Ballard Bridge on 15th and keep going — 15th Ave W becomes 15th Ave NW on the far side, and we’re a short way north of Market on the east side of the street.

About That Bridge

We’d rather tell you than have you find out.

The Ballard Bridge is a drawbridge, and it opens for vessels on the ship canal. Most of the time you’ll sail across. Occasionally you’ll sit for five to ten minutes watching a sailboat go by, and there’s no way to predict it from your driveway.

So: for a routine appointment, don’t worry about it. For anything with a fixed time — a surgery drop-off, a dental admission, a flight-deadline travel certificate — leave ten minutes more than you think you need. Nobody has ever regretted arriving early with a dog who hasn’t had breakfast, and we’d rather you weren’t anxious in traffic.

If you’re ever running late because of it, call us. We’d much rather move things around than have you drive badly.

Getting Here

North on 15th Ave W, over the bridge, continue on 15th Ave NW past NW Market St. We’re on the east side.

The RapidRide D Line crosses the bridge and runs the length of 15th, which is a real option from lower Magnolia and avoids parking entirely. Otherwise there’s free street parking on the side streets just off 15th — check the signs, some blocks are time-limited.

Discovery Park Dogs

Magnolia pets get more exercise than most of Seattle’s, and the injuries follow the terrain. What we see from your side of the bridge, more than anywhere else:

  • Cut and split pads, from beach rock and from trail that’s wetter than it looks
  • The limp that shows up the next morning after a long off-lead run — usually soft tissue, occasionally a cruciate, always worth a look rather than a week of rest and hope
  • Ticks, which people are often surprised by this close to the city, and which are a good reason not to let parasite prevention lapse over winter
  • Older dogs who are quietly sore from doing the same big walk they’ve always done. Arthritis is the most under-treated thing we see, and the dogs who hide it best are the ones who’ve always been athletes.

New clients welcome. We’ll ask for records from your current vet and take it from there.
